PURPOSE: To obtain excellent wear resistance and fatigue resistance as well as superior rolling fatigue resistance by applying nitriding to a ferrous metal article, then applying shot peening to it, and forming a porous layer of controlled thickness. CONSTITUTION: Nitriding is applied to a ferrous metal article capable of nitriding to form a porous layer as the outermost layer. Then, shot peening is applied to the porous layer to regulate the thickness of this porous layer to <=10μm. By this shot peening, the porous layer can be partly removed and also the shape of a notched part can be improved gently, and fatigue resistance can be improved. Further, by imparting compressive residual stress due to peening effect to a compound layer and a diffusion layer, fatigue resistance, rolling fatigue resistance, and wear resistance can also be improved.
