The present invention relates to a multi-component system for modifying, degrading or bleaching lignin, lignin-containing materials or similar substances and to a process for its use. The multi-component system comprises if appropriate, at least one oxidation catalyst; and at least one suitable oxidizing agent; and at least one mediator chosen from the group consisting of hydroxylamines, hydroxylamine derivatives, hydroxamic acids, hydroxamic acid derivatives and aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, heterocyclic or aromatic compounds which contain at least one N-hydroxy, oxime, N-oxy or N,N, -dioxy function; and if appropriate, at least one comediator from the group consisting of aromatic alcohols, carbonyl compounds, aliphatic ethers, phenolic ethers and/or olefins (alkenes); and a small amount of at least one free amine of a mediator employed in each case.
