A self-contained vertical bearing assembly (10), which includes a shaft (5) carrying a collar flange (13) by which it is supported on bearing thrust pads (22) (figure 2) and spaced from surrounding stator wall (36) within a lubricant bath, has in stator wall (36) recesses such as (37) which define viscosity pumps that deliver lubricant from the bath to utilisation means, such as a heat exchanger (43) or lubrication gallery for a bearing part (69), as the shaft rotates. Relatively short recesses that are as wide as the flange can operate irrespective of shaft rotation direction and nothwithstanding the gap between rotor and stator surfaces to deliver lubricant at sufficient rate and/or pressure to provide extra facilities without external pumps or major internal re-design of a bearing assembly. |
