A method for determining the wear at the periphery (1b) of a large cylindrical body (1) rotating about an axis (1a) e.g. the rolls of a crushing mill employs a friction wheel (2) in rolling contact with the body (1) such that the pair revolve without slip. The friction wheel (2) is provided with a resilient rubber, pneumatic tyre, or similar non-slip outer surface which is virtually wear-free.The revolutions of the friction wheel (2) are registered over a period of 10 to 15 seconds by the pulse counter (3) and the onset of wear causing a reduction in the radius (VM) is reflected in a corresponding fall in the revolution count of the constant radius (VR) of the wheel (2).
