A ruggedized gas detector having two or more perforated concentric cylinders (10, 20) and having a concentric perforated screen (50) inside the innermost cylinder (20). A pair of perforated tubes (60, 70) are positioned inside the perforated screen (50), and an infrared light source (65) is placed adjacent one end of one of the tubes (60) and an infrared sensor (75) is placed adjacent the same end of the other tube (70). A pair of inclined mirrors (66, 67) are positioned adjacent the respective other ends of the two tubes (60, 70), and an optical light path is created from the IR sensor (65) through a first tube (60), reflected by the mirrors (66, 67) to a return optical path through the second tube (70) and ultimately to the IR sensor (75).
