PURPOSE: To prevent the degradation in contrast without adversely affecting pixel parts by providing a display device with a flattening film between the display electrodes and substrates of a liquid crystal cell. CONSTITUTION: This display device is provided with an insulating film 31 and an SOG film 32 as the flattening film between the display electrodes 4 and the insulating film 20. Namely, the SOG film 32 held by the respective insulating films 20, 31 are formed on an auxiliary capacitor Cs and a TFT 61 (on an interlayer insulating film 15, a drain electrode 18 and a source electrode 19) and the display electrode 4 is formed on the SOG film 32. A stepped part B formed at the end of the auxiliary capacitor Cs is embedded by this SOG film 32, by which the surface of the display electrode 4 is flattened. Then, the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer 3 on the display electrode 4 is made uniform and the degradation in the contrast of the pixel 60 by the uniform orientation of the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer 3 on the stepped part B is prevented.
