PURPOSE: To provide a method to improve image data when a still image is displayed on an image display device. CONSTITUTION: An original picture 10 is formed by plotting a character graphic image 30 on a background image 20 of paper, etc., and stains 40 are attached to the background image 20. Original picture data 10D is generated by reading such original picture by a scanner, and background image data 20D is generated by passing the image data through a maximum value filter 100 and a noise elimination filter 110. Character graphic image data 30D is generated by subtracting the background image data 20D from the image data 10D in a circuit 120. An output image near to the original picture can be generated by layering the background image data 20D on the character graphic data 30D.
