PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound having high herbicidal activity at a low dose, capable of safely using to important crops such as wheat, corn and rice and useful as a selective herbicide. CONSTITUTION: This compound is expressed by formula I (R<1> is a 1-4C alkyl; R is H or a 1-4C alkyl; X is O, S, etc.; Q<1> is H, a 1-6C alkyl, etc.; Q<2> is a 1-6C alkyl, phenyl, etc.; A<1> is C or N; A<2> is O, SO2 , etc.; A<3> is a single bond, S, etc., excepting when A<2> and A<3> are simultaneously O), e.g. N-(2,5- dichlorophenyl)-2-(4-methyl-2-oxo-3-phenyl-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridin-1 -yl)isolactic acid amide. The compound is obtained by reacting, e.g. a 2-aminoisolactic acid derivative of formula II with anα-halogenoketone derivative of formula III (Hal<1> is a halogen), reacting the resultant intermediate with a reactive compound of an acetic derivative of formula IV to afford an amide compound and finally cyclizing the amide compound.
