PURPOSE: To provide a process for producing a lowα-olefin polymer, whereby a low-polymer of anα-olefin such as 1-hexene can be produced industrially advantageously in high yields and high selectivity without using any troublesome operation, and the long-term deterioration of the catalyst can be improved. CONSTITUTION: The polymerization of anα-olefin to form its low polymer is conducted by using a chrominum catalyst comprising a combination essentially consisting of a chromium compound, an amine or a metal amide, an alkylaluminum compound and a cyclic halohydrocarbon and bringing theα-olefin and the chromium catalyst into contact with each other in a solvent in a manner that the chromium compound is prevented from previously contacting the alkylaluminum compound.
