PURPOSE: To provide a reader capable of selecting a high definition mode or a high-speed mode, performing read faster at the time of the high-speed mode and/or performing the read more highly accurately at the time of the high definition mode. CONSTITUTION: The input of a buffer 41 is connected through a capacitor C to a CCD sensor 40, a 5V power source is connected through an analog switch to the input of the buffer 41 and the first AD converter 51 of 12 bits for the high definition mode and the second AD converter 42 of 8 bits for the high-speed mode are parallelly connected to the output. Reset pulsesϕR are inputted to the first AD converter 51 and the second AD converter 42 and a data selector 53 for selecting either one of the outputs and sending it out to a control circuit 52 is connected to the respective outputs.
