A device serves for cleaving or slitting preferably wood. It has a narrow tool, in particular a circular saw blade (15), which possesses cutting elements and produces a gap of finite width in the sawn article (10). The tool and the sawn article (10) are moved in a feed direction (30) relative to one another. A cleaving element (20) is arranged directly behind the cutting elements in the feed direction (30) of the sawn article (10). A profiled piece (12) separated from a sawn-article remainder (13) by the gap is thus bent out of the gap plane (11) away from the sawn-article remainder (13). A deflecting device (27, 28) is arranged at a first distance (L1) from the cleaving element (20) and exerts a force (F1) on the surface (44) of the profiled piece (12) facing away from the gap plane (11). A supporting device (40 to 42) is arranged at a second distance (L2) from the cleaving element (20) which is smaller than the first distance (L1).
