PURPOSE: To obtain image data which can be transmitted in a short transmission time by decreasing the amount of data without deteriorating picture quality so much. CONSTITUTION: The device and method for image compression are equipped with an image input part 15 which inputs image data having specific gradations, a 2nd RAM (RAM 2) 16 which temporarily stores the image data inputted by the image input part 15, an image compression part 14 which performs data compression by performing a specific encoding process at a compression ratio corresponding to a given argument for the image data stored in the 2nd RAM 16, and a CPU 11 which finds a code quantity obtained by the data compression by supplying an argument of minimizing the compression ratio within a stationary range and an argument of maximizing the compression ratio to the image compression part 14, calculates an argument required to obtain a target code quantity from those values and supplies it to the image compression part 14, and performs data compression. |
