<p>A reflective picture element electrode (107) comprising Cr is provided on a substrate (108), and a transparent picture element electrode (102) comprising ITO is formed on a substrate (101). Parallel alignment layers (106, 103) comprising polyimide alignment films are provided on the two substrates (108, 101), respectively, and these layers (106, 103) are not subjected to rubbing. A polymer-dispersed liquid crystal material, in which liquid crystals (105) and polymer particles (104) are dispersed and aligned, is provided between the substrates (108, 101). The liquid crystals (105) are aligned in parallel at random in the vicinity of the surfaces of the substrates, and twisted by about 90° between the substrates (101, 108). The orientation domain due to the random orientation of the liquid crystals is around 1-3 νm, i.e., the liquid crystals are uniformly multi-domained. Since the liquid crystals are thus random-oriented, the directivity of scattering is improved, and a driving voltage decreases.</p> |
