The invention relates to a novel silacyclohexane compound of formula (I) or formula (II) : <CHEM> wherein R is an organic residue, <CHEM> is an unsubstituted or substituted trans-1-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene group or trans-4-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene group, each of L1 and L2 is independently H, F, Cl or CH3; and X is an organic residue, CN, F or Cl; and <CHEM> wherein at least one of <CHEM> is an unsubstituted or substituted trans-1 or 4-sila-1,4-cyclohexylene group, and the other may be a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group. The preparation of the compounds is also described, as are a composition comprising the compounds and a display device comprising the composition.
