A self-propelled railway goods wagon has an electropneumatic control valve (51), a compressed air reservoir(55) for the brakes, a compressor(77) supplying it up to a suitable threshold pressure and a manual or remote-controlled device (87) to trigger the valve. There is at least one pressure monitor or sensor (69) to ensure that the brake release pressure is limited to an upper threshold. A further monitor or sensor ensures that if a minimum pressure is fallen below, the valve is switched off. The compressor is driven off the wagon's motor or from an axle. The pipe(75) between the compressor and the reservoir has a stop valve (81), a pressure-reducing valve(83) and/or a non-return valve (85).
