An upper reference frame (7) is placed on the head of the patient and comprises side arms (21) which have a series of holes (211) into which retaining pins (212) of positioning brackets (213) locate. The frame is held secured on the head by an upper support frame (51) which also fixes at its lower end into the holes in the side arms and which at its upper end has a support pad (53) which rests against the patients head. A rubber band (39) fixed to the bottom of the upper support frame wraps around the back of the patients head. An adjustable nose support (36) is fixed to the front cross-member (20) of the frame. The side of the head is supported by adjustable pins (54) in the side arms.
