In the prodn. of Ba or Sr carbonate or sulphate contg. sulphide, the evolution of H2S on contact with acids is reduced by treating the material with the NO2 gp. in the form of an (in)organic nitrite (IA) or organic nitro cpd. (IB). Also claimed are the cpds. contg. (IA) or (IB) in an amt. of 1-10 NO2 gps.sulphide ion.
