Prepn. of organophilic particles (I) of a metal oxide (MO), selected from silica, alumina, transition metal oxides (esp. titanium dioxide) and rare earth metal oxides (esp. cerium dioxide), involves reacting an aq. alcoholic suspension (a) of MO particles, in which the surface has no pores of dia. below 5 nm, with an anhydrous alcoholic soln. (b) of at least one alkoxysilane of formula Si(OR)xR'4-x (II). R = 1-6C alkyl; R' = alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl. The alcohols in (a) and (b), same or different, have 1-5C. Also claimed are (I) obtd. by the process, processes for preparing organic suspensions of (I) and the obtd. suspensions.
|
