New bifunctional ruthenium (II) or ruthenium (III) complexes comprise: (i) a gp. capable of recognising a peptide sequence contg. at least one histidine residue, consisting of a central Ru atom bonded to a CO3 ligand or to two ligands selected from Cl, Br, I or H2O; and (ii) ligands, at least one of which bears at least one functional gp. with intrinsic reactivity towards other opt. modified amino acids. 5 cpds (I) are specifically claimed e.g.: cis-dichloro-bis-(4,4'-bis4-(4-benzoylbenzoyloxy)butoxycarbonyl- 2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium (II); (Ia); and cis-carbonato-bis(4,4'-bis-4-(4-benzoylbenzoyloxy)butoxycarbonyl- 2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium (II).
