PURPOSE: To lower the voltage of a power source to be used and to suppress an increase in electric power consumption by properly setting the polarity or pulse amplitude of selected information pulses and non-selected information pulses. CONSTITUTION: The driving voltage of selected pixels is so set as to be included in an upper region of a curve 31 and the driving voltage of non-selected (half selected) pixels is so set as to be included within a region held by the curves 31, 32. The pulse width of the selected information pulses for the selected pixels is set small, by which theτ-V characteristic curve is shifted to a low voltage side and the drivable voltage level of liquid crystals is lowered. Such non- selected information pulses as to reverse the polarity of the effective voltage of the pixels at the timing just before the writing pulses or erasing pulses given from scanning signal electrodes from the polarity of the writing pulses or erasing pulses are impressed on the non-selected pixels (pixels of the half-selected state), by which the non-driving region of the liquid crystals is expanded to the low voltage side.
