The propulsion unit, designed for a terrestrial vehicle, consists of a pressurised water reactor (1) which feeds a steam turbine (8) connected to an air-cooled condenser (9), and with the resulting rotational kinetic energy transmitted to propulsion wheels (20) through an alternator or a DC power generator (18) driven by the turbine and powering traction motors (19). The condenser is cooled by air drawn in by a fan (11) driven by the turbine and conditioned in a cooler (14) or heater (22). The reactor is enclosed in a confinement chamber which can be linked to the condenser so that in the event of a reactor emergency with a release of radioactive material the latter can pass round a closed circuit from which heat can be continuously drawn.
