PURPOSE: To retrieve a desired character string even if an indeterminate character string is inputted by selecting which of a determinate character string and the indeterminate character string is used for retrieval and estimating retrieved character string candidates from the input character string in the case of the latter. CONSTITUTION: This device and method has a determinate retrieval mode using a fixed code and a indeterminate retrieval mode, and a retrieval mode which is set at the time of document editing is stored in a retrieval mode storage part 107. In the indeterminate retrieval mode, the inputted character string is stored in an input character storage device 108 as it is without converting its reading, and on the basis of the retrieval character string, a front end processor 102 extracts retrieval character string candidates to be converted from a KANJI(Chinese character) dictionary 105 and stores them in a retrieval character storage part 109. In the retrieval character storage part 109, a retrieval object document in a user document part 106 is retrieved from the retrieval start address to the retrieval end address by using a character code string determined as an object of retrieval in a retrieval character storage part 109; when no retrieval object character string is found, the candidate is changed to a next candidate to perform retrieval again. |
