PURPOSE: To reduce internal resistance and increase energy density of a battery by using carbon in place of conventional tungsten wire as a current collector and an electrode material to enlarge the electrode surface area in the case of using selenium and sulfur as an active material. CONSTITUTION: A sodium secondary battery has a container and a solid electrolyte (example:β" alumina tube) 4 which is arranged in the container, partitions the container in two rooms, and through which a sodium ion can selectively passes. A negative active material 6 having sodium as an essential component is filled in one room (inside of 7) partitioned with solid electrolyte 4 and a positive active material having a mixed salt of metal chlorides and chalcogens as an essential component is filled in the other room. (2, 3 are housed). Dense carbon is used in the material of a positive current collector 2 and porous amorphous carbon is used in the material of an electrode 3, and they are chemically bonded. (example: a carbon cement adhesive is used).
