PACKING ELEMENT, IN PARTICULAR FOR SHUTTING-OFF AND REGULATING MEANS, AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING THE SAME

A packing element, in particular for shutting-off and regulating means, consists of a plate-like, piston-like or ball-like shutting-off body made of a metallic or non-metallic material, for example an Al2O3 ceramic material. A hard layer is deposited for example by a plasma CVD process on a working surface of the shutting-off body. The hard layer has an adhesive layer portion and a sliding layer portion. The working surface of the shutting-off body is physically etched in advance by an argon sputtering process. When switching from the etching process to the adhesive layer portion application process, and also subsequently to the sliding layer portion application process, the process parameters are regulated to achieve determined gradients between the various process steps. This substantially improves the adhesiveness of the hard layer to the working surface of the shutting-off body.
