A pressure piston is movable in a pressure cylinder in the hydraulic tappet. A leakage ring gap is arranged between the pressure cylinder and the pressure piston. In relation to the dia. and the facing surface, the pressure cylinder (4) and pressure piston (5) are so arranged that the sinking time of the pressure piston in the pressure cylinder during operation of the engine is short.The short-time length alterations of the valves, esp. the thermic length alterations, esp. of the exhaust valves during the time period in which the valve is closed, are considerably compensated. A device is provided for raising the temp. of the oil in the high pressure chamber (11) of the valve clearance compensation component (1) and is formed as a heat exchanger through which engine coolant flows.
