An outwardly-opening poppet valve fuel injector 6 provides a basically conical fuel or fuel/air mixture spray 12 with a spray portion 31 directed towards the spark plug electrodes 14, 15. The spray portion 31 provides an ignitable mixture at the spark gap 16 with an overall lean charge in the cylinder 4. A recess (26, 126, Figs. 2 to 5) in the annular wall (24, 124) of the injector downstream of the valve seat (20) and spaced from the valve head (10) provides the spray portion 31. <IMAGE>
