PURPOSE: To improve the conveyance speed and a movement amount of a paper sheet by a method wherein an operating element is formed of a member formed in such a manner that a conveyance force by friction between an operating element making contact with an object to be conveyed and reciprocated and the object to be conveyed is increased to a value higher than a conveyance fore by friction in a direction reverse to the conveyance direction of the object to be conveyed. CONSTITUTION: A conveying device used in a printer and a scanner is provided with an operating element 11 supported by a piezoelectric element 2 expanded and contracted through control of energization, and a stator 12 supported by a press spring 5. A paper sheet 1 is moved in a paper feed direction by a conveyance force by friction between the reciprocated operating element 11 and the paper sheet 1. In this case, when a friction force exerted between the operating element 11 and the paper sheet 1 is f1 and a friction force exerted between the operating element 11 and the paper sheet 1 when the paper sheet 1 is moved in a direction reverse to a paper feed direction by friction between the operating element 11 and the paper sheet 1 is f2, a member and a material having orientation properties for a friction force of f1≫f2 is used for the material of the operating element 11. This constitution improves a conveyance speed.
