PURPOSE: To obtain a drive system for a stepping motor in which temperature rise due to heating can be prevented. CONSTITUTION: The drive system for operating a stepping motor 1 by a predetermined amount by feeding a drive pulse series thereto comprises means for detecting the operating speed of the stepping motor 1, an operating speed altering means for increasing the operating speed of the stepping motor 1 sequentially after starting thereof, and current supply altering means for altering the current supply mode for the stepping motor 1 from continuous supply mode to intermittent supply mode. A speed detection means monitors the operating speed of the stepping motor 1 upon starting the operation and the operating speed altering means increases the operating speed until the stepping motor 1 reaches a predetermined operating speed. When the predetermined speed is reached, the current supply altering means alters the current supply mode for the step motor 1 from continuous supply mode to intermittent supply mode.
