PURPOSE: To prevent a decrease in contrast and mixing of colors for the enhancement of display quality by forming on the surface of a back glass substrate a light absorbing layer to be located beneath either address electrodes or display electrodes. CONSTITUTION: Display electrodes 12 are provided on the surface of the front glass substrate 10 of an AC gas discharge panel, and a layer 14 of dielectric material is formed on the electrodes 12. An MgO film 16 is provided on the layer 14 as a protective film. A black light-absorbing layer 19 is first provided on that surface of a back glass substrate 18 which is opposite to the film 16, and address electrodes 20 are provided on the layer 19 with the adjoining electrodes 20 partitioned from each other by a partition (separator) 22. Phosphors 24 corresponding to three primary colors are provided on the electrodes 20. |
