摘要 PURPOSE: To improve the visual angle characteristics in the lateral direction by differentiating the retardation of plural phase difference films to be interposed. CONSTITUTION: A pair of polarizing plates 1, 5 area arranged across a TN type liquid crystal cell 4 and the first and second phase difference films (the phase difference film on the liquid crystal cell side is made second) 2, 3 having the axes of orientation intersecting orthogonally with each other are arranged between one of these polarizing plates and the liquid crystal cell 4. The product &Delta;n1 .d1 of the refractive index anisotropy &Delta;n1 and thickness d1 of the first phase difference film 2 in particular is set larger than the product &Delta;n2 .d2 of the refractive index anisotropy &Delta;n2 and thickness d2 of the second phase difference film. The product &Delta;n.d of the refractive index anisotropy &Delta;n and thickness (d) of the liquid crystal cell 4 is preferably set in a range of 470&plusmn;200&mu;m. The difference &Delta;=&Delta;n1 .d1 -&Delta;n2 .d2 of the products of the refractive index anisotropy and thicknesses of the first and second phase difference films is preferably set in a range of 0<&Delta;<=50nm.
