The detection system (1) is set in the roadway, transverse to the traffic direction. The detection system includes a number of detectors (2), each being sensitive to a different pressure range. Each detector independently transmits a signal when sensing a pressure in its range. The detectors are positioned one after the other, lying across the roadway.The detectors are mounted on a plate (3) which is placed on the road surface. The detection signals are transmitted through cables to a data acquisition unit, which receives, records and processes the data to give not only a count of the number of vehicles passing but also an estimate of their type.
