Messages are transmitted in both directions over a single monomode fibre (OAL) between a subscriber connection (LT) at the exchange, and a subscriber station (TSt) with a passive optical interface (PNT1) having a reflective coating (r) on the plug connector. The reflected portion of the signal is returned to an optical receiver (e/o) where it is used to adjust the downstream level of the optical transmission under the control of a microprocessor driving a comparator/amplifier (V) and a variable delay circuit (tau) operating on the pseudo-noise sequence of a correlator (X,J).
