For a virtual connection set up in an asynchronous transmission method which transmits information cells at a rate which, when observed over a lengthy period, is not constant, a method is proposed which on the one hand limits the maximum rate and on the other hand controls the access of the information cells to a connection line carrying information cells of a plurality of virtual connections.
