A synchronous motor comprising an armature (60) with a plurality of projections (25) connected to a yoke (1) and separated by slots (2) containing windings (26). A field system (61) comprising a plurality of magnets (8) lying on a sole plate (9) is separated from the armature (60) by an airgap (7). The size of the motor is such that the projections (25) on the armature (60) have a uniform cross-section along their full length (H) and the breadth (bn) of the slots (2) perpendicularly to the ends (62) of the projections is substantially the same as the breadth (bd) of the projection ends so that the interfering reluctance effect caused by the slots (2) is minimised. The synchronous motor may be a linear or rotary motor.
