PURPOSE: To readily and economically obtain a trans-difluoroethylene derivative useful as a liquid crystal compound in high yield and by a short process by reacting a specific trifluoroethylene compound with a Li compound. CONSTITUTION: This compound of formula III is obtained by reacting (A) a compound of formula I [R<2> is an (F-substituted) 1-10C alkyl, a halogen or CN; A<4> is a (CN-substituted) 1,4-disubstituted cyclohexylene or a 1,4-disubstituted cyclohexenylene; Y<2> is COO, C≡C or CH2 CH2 ; A<3> is a (CN-substituted) 1,4- disubstituted cyclohexenylene or 1,4-disubstituted phenylene; (n) is 0 or 1] with a compound of formula II [R<1> is R<2> ; A<1> is A<4> ; Y<1> is Y<2> ; A<2> is a (CN-substituted) trans-1,4-disubstituted cyclohexylene; (m) is (n)].
