A method for preparing cyclic esters, wherein the cyclic esters formed are removed from the reaction medium by steaming and the resulting vapour mixture is condensed to recover the cyclic esters and a residual aqueous solution. The method is useful for synthesising poly alpha -hydroxycarboxylic acid polymer precursors that are particularly suitable for use as a biomaterial.
