Smart card reader operating without physical contacts

The procedure for reading smart cards includes use of a reader in which the transmission and reception lobes for radiation are configured so that a number of smart cards may be accessed simultaneously. The radiation pulses are transmitted with a coding system so that the consumption of electricity by the smart card is reduced.A logical number is attributed to each smart card which is being used so that a communication channel is established with this card. Communication then takes place in a cyclical fashion, with each of the smart cards presented to the card reader. The radiation used for communication may be infrared.
