Method of dry cutting of workpiece

The method involves inserting a workpiece (2) in a machining chamber (1). The machining chamber comprises a square-shaped housing (14) which has an opening (18) at the side facing the tool allowing the tool to plunge within the chamber. The tool is surrounded by a cover plate (20) with guides (26) which allow it to slide parallel to the Z-axis of the machine. At the edge of the housing is a sealing strip (33) whilst on its side faces (34,35) are gas extraction opening (36) and supply openings (37a,b). The holes are so arranged that within the chamber the flow of gas runs parallel to the X-direction. In the area of the machined surface of the workpiece is a plate (42) which separates the machining chamber into a partial chamber (44). Suction is applied through one of the openings (36) into the lower narrower section of the partial chamber. This narrow section causes an ordered pressure gradient leading to evacuation of the chips.
