A valve assembly has first and second fluid inlets (16, 20) with a predetermined cross-section of flow, at least one valve member (44) prestressed by a first spring arrangement (106) in a first position in which the first inlet communicates with the second inlet (16, 20), and valve actuating means (42) that move the valve member (44) into a second position in which fluid communication between the first and second inlets (20) is checked. The valve arrangement is characterised in that the prestressing force of the first spring arrangement (106), the force exercised by the valve actuating means (42) on the valve member (44) and the cross-sections of flow of the fluid inlets (16, 20) are such that when a predetermined fluid pressure is applied to the second fluid inlet (20), the valve member (44) opens the second fluid inlet (20) until a fluid communication is established with the first fluid inlet (16).
