The present invention relates to a method of reconfiguring a simulated keyboard device in the computer system including a display screen, a pointing device and a simulated keyboard device and running an application program running independently of, but receiving keystroke input from the simulated keyboard device comprising the steps of: (A) presenting on the display screen a plurality of key-group icons, each including an area corresponding to at least one key, (B) receiving data from the pointing device and moving the presentation of a key-group icon on the display screen in a corresponding fashion, whereby a user of the system can move individual key-group icons on the display screen, (C) binding together a plurality of key-group icons, such that they can be moved by the user as a single unit which can be used to provide keystroke input to a program.
