A device for applying unipolar electrical charges on moved, essentially electrically insulating surfaces comprises an elongated corona electrode with at least one auxiliary electrode; an electrically conductive counter-electrode supporting the surface, and a high-voltage d.c. source connected to the electrodes. A support made of electrically insulating material in the form of a channel has a base wall and two side walls, the open edges of the side walls facing the counter-electrode. The corona electrode is situated in the channel at the base wall and does not project beyond the open edges on the side walls. At least one auxiliary electrode is situated between corona electrode and counter-electrode at or near each edge of the side walls. One pole of the high-voltage d.c. source is connected to the corona electrode, a second pole to the counter and auxiliary electrodes. An ohmic resistor is connected between the second pole of the high-voltage d.c. source and the auxiliary electrodes.
