The plane has a planing guide (2) comprising a plate (2b) and an arm (2a). The arm can be slid along its longitudinal axis or held in position w.r.t. the plane housing (5) by a stop (4). The stop can be rotated about its longitudinal axis between positively located settings on the housing that fix the arm in position or allow the arm to be moved. The stop exerts pressure at the contact surfaces on the arm which stops the arm from moving. This pressure is released by rotation of the stop which parts the contact surfaces, allowing the arm to be slid into the desired position for guiding the plane.
