The recording and playback machine includes at least one cassette (4) containing discs (2) which are transferred from the cassette to an optical operating mechanism (7) by means of a carriage device (5). This carriage device acts on cleaning equipment (12) which has a mobile cleaning element (11) to clean the reading/writing head (9) on the optical mechanism. The cleaning element may be a brush or a strip of cloth or leather which glides over the surface of the head as the cleaning equipment swivels. The cleaning element is fitted onto the swivelling arm in such a way that it can be exchanged, and connects at its limit of travel with a discharge device for static electrical charge.
