A protective layer of Cr incorporating other solid particles is deposited on a metal base by electrodeposition in a bath of aqueous electrolyte containing trivalent Cr ions and the solid particles. The electrolyte is prepared by reduction of chromic acid using a reducing agent. The bath is also claimed.
