PURPOSE: To obtain a detergent useful for cleaning parts of machines, electric devices, optical devices, etc., having excellent removability of fats and oils, grease, etc., on the surface of solid bodies, stain such as protein attached to fibers, safety and environmental adaptability, containing 2-methyl-2,4- diphenylpentane. CONSTITUTION: This detergent comprises (A) 2-methyl-2,4-diphenylpentane, optionally (B) a solvent such as an aliphatic alcohol, an ether, an ester, a partial ether or a polyhydric alcohol or an aprotic polar solvent, (C) a surfactant and (D) an enzyme. The component A, for example, is obtained by dimerizingα- methylstyrene by using a catalyst such as toluenesulfonic acid at 40-90 deg.C, distilling the formed product to give a mixture of 2,4-diphenyl-4-methyl-1-pentene or 2,4-diphenyl-4-methyl-2-pentene and hydrogenating only the aliphatic unsaturated double bond of the mixture by using a catalyst such as Ni or Pd under hydrogen pressure.
