PURPOSE: To obtain a safe aldose reductase inhibitor, having strong activities and useful as a preventing and therapeutic agent for diabetic complications. CONSTITUTION: This aldose reductase inhibitor contains a thermorubin derivative of formula I [R1 and R3 are each an alkyl, an alkoxyl, an alkenyl, benzyl, naphthyl, furyl, thienyl, benzofuryl (which can be substituted), H, a halogen, OH, NH2 , primary amide or carboxyl which may be esterified or amidated; R2 is an aklyl, an alkoxyl, an alkenyl, benzyl, naphthyl, furyl, thienyl, benzofuryl (which can be substituted), H, a halogen, OH or NH2 ; X is O or N which can be substituted with an alkyl] or formula II to IV as an active ingredient. The thermorubin derivative is induced from thermorubin produced by culturing Thermoactinomyces thalpophilus (ATCC14560) or Thermoactinomyces sp. UAT-8 (FERM P-13372). |
