Signal transmission apparatus can be connected to a telecommunication system of the kind enabling communication with a remote location over a communication path having a predetermined bandwidth, e.g. the public telephone system. A block of information which has an original time duration is first time compressed by the apparatus and time compressed signals are produced which fit within the bandwidth of the telecommunication system and represent the original information but can be transmitted in a duration less than the original duration of the information block. The apparatus establishes the communication path on the telecommunication system to begin a call and then transmits the time compressed signals over the path before terminating the call. In this way, the duration of usage of the telecommunication system can be minimised and costs saved.
