The user inserts a coded card into a parking control machine. The full value of the pre-paid credit stored on the card is taken out by the parking control machine, which then displays and prints the last time allowed for parking covered by the full amount of the credit. The user then re-inserts the card in the machine when they wish to leave the parking place. The machine computes the actual time stayed, and restores to the card the difference between the credit removed at the start of the interval and the cost of parking for the measured time. The cards may be printed with publicity material.
