The procedure uses a flat mould with a series of recesses in it corresponding to the shape of the tiles (4). The recesses are filled with the material used to make the tiles, and a flexible backing layer (5) is applied to the tiles before they are removed from the mould. The tiles, attached to the backing layer, are applied to the surface which is to be tiled, and the gaps between the tiles grouted. The backing layer can be attached to the tiles by pressing it into the tile mixture while it is soft, and fixed with the aid of staples; it is made from a coarse weave of natural or artificial fibres, and it covers the tiles with an overlap along at least one edge for ease of handling.
