The staircase has a central column (2) which extends the whole height of the stairs. It is made of segments (5) running lengthwise, which are glued together. The narrow end (16) of each step (3) fits into a notch (7) in the column. Each step is reinforced by a support (12). The vertical edge (14) of the support fits against the central column. Stay rods (4) pass through grooves in the central column and screw into a nut (19) lodged in the support. The stay rod is supported by its head in the section of the column opposite the step. The support (12) has two pins (17) which extend from its vertical edge (14) and which fit into holes (9) in the column. These pins are sited on either side of a groove through which the stay rod passes. Each of the supporting ribs (12) has a flat, lower edge (15) which rests on the top of the narrow end (16) of the step below. The lengthwise sections (5) which form the column are shaped like a trapezium and the wood fibres run lengthwise. The sections are joined together by a false tongue (6). |
